Food in Croatia

One of the main reasons people travel to Croatia is the food. In last few centuries culture and food in this country got under different influences. This part of Europe was a “must stop“ during travels from East to West. At first these influences you can notice in the food locals eat in their homes. So we got a very interesting mixture of Italian way of eating and Turkish delicious dishes.
Now when you arrive to Croatia you can enjoy entirely huge and diversified types of dishes. From North of Croatia, famous for its “kulen“ to Dalmatian coast of Adriatic Sea, mostly famous for “pršut“ and so many great things.
Important information you should know while traveling: in Zagreb you can find anything and everything. From exotic restaurants and street food, to amazing local places that offer real home comfort food.It is a bit different situation at the coast. Whichever restaurant you chose that offers Italian food, you will not make mistake. It is usually impeccable, pizzas and pastas are very similar to those you get in any town of Italy. Also finding a breakfast place is a real adventure: you might have to search for days. Here we don’t have tradition of eating breakfasts. People in Dalmatia eat first “marenda“ which is around 10am. Usually it is something very fast and simple: biscuits, fruits, something from the bakery. Noon is the time the lunch is served in almost every home at the coast. This is like an unwritten rule. If your lunch is not ready at the table at 12:00, you have a lazy wife.
Talking about lunch and dinner, most of the people that come to visit Croatia think that we eat a lot of fish and sea food. Which is a logical opinion considering the fact that we are close to one of the cleanest seas in the world. But its not really true. Croatians are real meat lovers, so having a fish for lunch is maximum once a week: on Fridays.
The great feeling you will definitely get while staying in Croatia is the quality of the ingredients of which food is prepared. While you stay in small place like Pakoštane, most of the families have their own garden with farm so you can expect the freshest veggies and eggs every day. Our advice i to always choose a place with breakfast included. You will get the amazing start of the day and that is the most important for the good holiday.
